Since we got back to Egypt beginning of this fall, I’ve asked every woman I’ve met who has been pregnant or given birth here, which OBGYN she has tried and if there was anyone she could recommend. After several weeks of surveying, I had two names on my list; a Dr. Hamza, and a Dr. Tareq. Both came highly recommended. Since the most recent intelligence regarded Dr. Tareq, I decided to try him first, and today I had my first appointment.
Dr. Tareq took down my history, I asked some initial questions about his procedures, the birth, etc., he checked my blood pressure, urine for protein and/or diabetes, had some blood drawn to check my iron levels, measured my uterus, and finally we listened to the baby’s heartbeat. In other words, it was a regular prenatal check-up. All went very well. The person who drew my blood was an older Egyptian man who did not speak one word of English, but he was excellent. I’ve never had somebody draw blood that effectively, and I used to be a donor in Europe. The nurses were all very kind, and the doctor, trained in England, seemed indeed very competent and interested – present. The only downside is that he’s not on our insurance short list, but everything will still be covered (it will just take a little more paper work), so I think we’re pretty much hooked.
In Belgium, the maternity care is very high quality, but sometimes a bit invasive for our liking, and to avoid unnecessary procedures, we’ve learned to be on our guard when it comes to prenatal care. Here, as far as I could tell, it’s not much different from Europe, if perhaps a bit more invasive even, with what we imagine is a more American approach. Whatever the case, the doctor seemed able to adjust to our preferences, and I’m sure we will be able to work out whatever differences of opinion we might have. I'm glad to have found someone.

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
