A quiet Eid week in Maadi

Because we arrived after Ramadan had already started, and because it took us a couple of weeks to get back into a routine, we didn’t think about making plans for this Eid, and it kind of just snuck up on us. When the professor came home from work on Sunday, announcing that he didn’t have to teach for a whole week, I went “huh?” and glanced over at the calendar. Sure enough; there was no taekwondo or soccer for the next several days. I guess we could have gone to the beach.

I’m glad we didn’t though. It has been great to just catch up a bit, relax, and enjoy the empty streets of Maadi. It’s obvious the large majority of people here did go somewhere, because I don’t remember the streets ever being this deserted (perhaps over last Christmas – maybe). The day after the actual Eid, I went to the grocery store to get the ingredients for our Moroccan chicken stew, and the store was, like the streets, deserted; not only were there very little people shopping, but there was also no food. I had to go from Seoudi to Kimo to Myriam’s before I found chicken, and even at Myriam’s, I grabbed the last package. “It’s because of the Eid” the butcher explained to me, “after Ramadan, everybody so hungry after fasting, they eat everything until finished.”

Our first Ramadan here in Maadi and we were surprised how crazy it was at Carfour at the beginning of Ramadan. My husband and son went and come back empty handed because the lines were so long. He said it was like going to the store the week of Thanksgiving!

Yes, this has happened to us too. It's like that at Carrefour on Fridays and Saturdays as well, and sometimes Thursday evenings. We always try to go during the week, mid-day if possible.

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
