Cats in Cairo

There are a lot of stray cats in Cairo. Tons. There are probably at least ten cats that have made their home around our building. They seem to eat mainly garbage, although a lot of people feed the cats here as well. They’re very cute, and I always want to take one home.

The other day we had one of those Egyptian moments, walking to tennis, when we saw a really cute black slender young cat feasting on something light bright. At first I thought, “Oh, didn’t that cat get lucky!” (as in, that cat must have got its paws on a chicken carcass or something) but then I realized what it was eating: an old, used menstrual pad. It was chewing through the plastic, purring. Yuck!

I think I threw up a little in my mouth.

PS. You should ask Rachel one day what cats eat. She almost always answers, "Garbage." Very matter-of-factly, too. It's hilarious.

And very true of what she's known.

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
