Bacon in Egypt

Once in a while we have brunch at the Maadi House. You can order off the menu (Eggs Benedict, anyone?) or you can enjoy the breakfast buffet, which includes bacon. Yes, that’s right: bacon. Yesterday we had our yearly fill, or at least I did, and then we played tennis. I was so stuffed I had trouble moving.

Before we moved here I wasn’t exactly in love with bacon – I’d very rarely eat it by itself - although I’ve realized we relied on it quite a bit for flavor and such in various dishes. A favorite, for example, was fresh goat cheese wrapped in bacon (bought at the Saturday market from the 'goat cheese man'), warmed up with honey drizzled over it, and served over a nice salad. Haven’t had that in a while.

You can buy bacon here at the (Coptic) Deli, but it's SO overpriced, and I can't help but think about Garbage city where most pigs here are raised, when I buy it, so - well - basically I don't.

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
