Warm winters and hot summers: adjusting to the Cairo, Egypt climate

I talked to my friend in Edmonton, Canada, the other day, and she told me it was minus 25 degrees there; so cold that they couldn’t play outside. I don’t even know if she meant Fahrenheit or Celsius, but I don’t think it really matters. Minus 25 degrees is really, really cold!

It was that same day that the boys & I went swimming at the Maadi House. The pool is heated. With about 73° F, or approximately 23° C, in the air, it’s a little chilly when you get out of the water, but really, it doesn’t get cold here in Egypt, not even mid-winter.

I have lived in cold climates; I’ve had my nostrils freeze and my toes go numb, but the other day when I talked to my friend about the cold, I couldn’t imagine it. I couldn’t remember what it feels like. I promised my friend though, that while basking in the sun by the pool that afternoon, I would really, really try.

Once when my mom was in college, her roommate came in from outside and said, "It feels like it's 20 degrees out there!"

And my aunt said casually, "Above or below?"

The roommate's jaw just about hit the floor. She couldn't fathom being 20 degrees BELOW zero.

Ugh. Being from Alberta, myself, I can say that cold is no fun.

I survived the summer here, being pregnant, and I would STILL choose hot over cold.

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
