Our fall/winter mini-depression: cloudy days in Cairo

I used to live in one of the rainiest countries in the world, and it never really bothered my mood, but here in Egypt, I’ve got so used to the sun, I guess, that if there’s more than one cloud in the sky, I feel down. Yesterday and today have been cloudy; I’ve turned on the heaters, made hot chai tea, put socks on and the Requiem in the CD player, turned on all the lights, and refuse to go outside. The boys, in fact all of us, are getting a lot of work done as we’re all curled up around the dinner table, with piles of papers, books, and computers growing by the hour. It’s like we’re having a miniature fall/winter for a couple of days - of course, only there’s no real fall or winter outside. Last night when I had to run a couple of errands, I threw a sweater on because I noticed the temperature goes down to under 15°C at night. That’s about it though; we’re not snowed in, it’s not dark 20 hours of the day, and it’s not like we have to get hats, mitts, scarves, fleeces, jackets, long-johns, socks, boots, and such on every morning and get to work through icy rain or snow. Those days, thank goodness, are behind (and probably also ahead of) us. For now, we’ll suffer through the Egyptian winter the expat way; with not much effort at all. We're so blessed.

No kidding. I'm freezing. Like, where IS the sunshine, already?!

And how in the world am I going to survive in what will likely be a much colder climate (unless we end up at the U of A)?

And how in the world did I survive my cold, Canadian childhood?

Brrrr...just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine. :)

We're so spoiled here!

Still. I'm so sick of wearing socks.

My Cairo mates are all complaing about the cold... but I managed to fill the trunk/boot of my car with snow yesterday afternoon when I didn't clear it off properly - opened it to put the groceries in..oops! 20 minutes of shovelling it out of the car with my hands.. that will teach me to be lazy. Mind you.. those Cairo apartments can be pretty cold at this time of the year.. and then there is that nasty wind in February to look forward to!

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
