Over-paying for foreign food only days before our home leave - shame on me!

Over the past month, or since I got our home leave tickets, I’ve been eyeing favorite American and Scandinavian products in the grocery store but firmly refraining myself from over-paying for treats I will be able to enjoy soon. The “I can wait” rule has worked quite well actually. Swedish caviar spread for a small fortune, taco shells worth five meals at a Taco Bell, only to mention a couple of items I might otherwise have been tempted to break down and buy, have all been left for the feast I call ‘home leave.’

Today my weakness showed itself however, in the shape of cream soda. I cannot tell you exactly why, but this temptation grew too big. Entranced by the knowledge that the store only gets about 15 cream soda cans a year, and that those cream sodas will be gone tonight if I don’t strike immediately, I bought all but one.

What did they cost? I don’t know. I closed my eyes in shame when they were rung up, and now, an hour later, I’m starting to feel sick, having finished my second can.

Hi Jen, my name is Jessica. I have been reading your blog for the past few weeks and thought I'd introduce myself.

I will be moving back to Cairo from the U.S. in July. and will be staying with my Egyptian husband's family in New Maadi for awhile. I have lived in Cairo a few years ago for 9 months and vacationed there last summer. I have a 3 year old boy (who was born in the U.S.)and am 7 weeks pregnant; I will most likely deliver in Egypt, if all goes well.

As far as non-Arabic food cravings go, as I'm sure you know, they are killer during pregnancy! I spent my second trimester in Cairo and would have paid anything for a slice of American pizza or even some ranch dressing. I am not looking forward to it.

Take care!
Jessica

Säg inte att du faktiskt gillar cream soda!! Det backar ju till och med jag på, och jag äter ju nästan allt! ;-)

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
