Happy Holidays in Cairo, Egypt

Christmas was so much better this year than last, and it was all the little things that made it.

*We had a nice potluck with friends on Christmas Eve.

*My friend Ann had bought us candy canes last year that she gave us this past summer, and that we brought with us back to Egypt. My friend Michelle had also sent some little Christmas things. It may not seem like much, but to us, this was a big thing: candy canes and Christmas labels from good friends across the world.

*We had bought most of the boys’ Christmas presents in the US this past summer – they’ve been sitting in a closet for the past four months – but on Christmas Day Santa was able to bring things that we could never dream of finding here in Egypt. Good, price worthy toys that were not broken and do not easily break.

*I abandoned the idea of trying to recreate a Swedish Christmas meal (which so miserably failed last year), and instead we had a very nice American turkey dinner with all that goes with it. I made a perfect pumpkin pie, and we ejoyed fresh strawberries which are in season for the moment.

*We didn’t spend Christmas day trying to fix or make up for broken fake toys, but the boys played with their Transformers, Playstation II games, Ben 10 and Star Wars toys. I lit candles, put out grandma’s hand sewn Christmas table cloth, and we played the Requiem on the CD player. We ate with our neighbors and friends, and went to bed fairly early; the boys exhausted from all the excitement, and happy about their day.

Our house looks pretty, Maadi is quiet, and Courtney doesn't have to go back to teaching until the 1st of February of 2009 - an eternity from now (he's out playing baseball with the boys for the moment) – we’re enjoying our Christmas in Egypt.

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
