A six-year old's linguistic development

August has reached an age where he speaks quite fluently. His language is still developing, but he’s not making those ‘still learning to talk’ mistakes anymore. He uses new words all the time, but because he tends to think about them for a long time beforehand, his sentences are usually well thought out by the time they come out of his mouth. I remember he was like this with Dutch too, when he started kindergarten In Belgium. He didn’t speak at all for several months, and then suddenly one day he used full sentences, perfectly constructed, few mistakes.

Because of this, it’s easy to notice when he does make a mistake, and usually it’s a very logical one. Sometimes it’s so logical or cute that you almost refrain yourself from correcting him.

Today he left his spelling work suddenly and wandered over to William who was working on his math. “What are you doing, August?” I asked. “I’m make-sureing that William is getting it right,” he informed me.

For a six-year-old with that many languages rolling around in his head i'd say he's doing pretty well. Kudos to his teacher/mom. :)

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
