This weekend we went on an AUC walking tour of the area around Al-Azhar park. We visited several mosques and other buildings that are part of a restoration project the university is involved in.
See the picture with my foot in it? Do you see the hieroglyphics? What you see is a threshold. When this mosque was built, the constructors 'borrowed' a few stones from Giza or Memphis. The stones have lasted thousands of years, right, so should make for good construction material?
Behind the family on a mosque roof you see the citadel. Al-Azhar park is to our right, the Nile and pyramids visible on our left.
On our way back to Maadi, William suddenly got out of his seat on the bus and made his way to me, excited, handing me his front tooth. He had lost his fourth tooth! "Mama, this is the first time* I loose a tooth on a trip like this!" he exclaimed, and added after a while, seeing our neighborhood appear, "This was a fun trip, but it will be nice to be back in Egypt!"
It was a beautiful day! Slightly windy; just enough to clear the air of pollutants, sunny, and a pleasant 23 degrees Celsius.
