I finally finished my work last week, and our homeschooling is now up and running as ever before, but with a few slight adjustments accommodating the presence of our new little student, Karl-Abraham. Before he was born, I thought I would be able to get back into things a
lot sooner; I anticipated two weeks off, but in fact, because of various complications, it took us closer to five weeks to get back into full gear. I’m glad the boys’ schoolwork went so well in the months preceding the birth; this meant they haven’t fallen behind barely at all, and at the rate we’re going now, we’ll finish the school year as planned with a bit of extra time for field trips and projects to spare.
Because of Karl-Abraham’s eating and sleeping schedule (it’s a bit misleading to call it a schedule, but whims would be too extreme to the other side) our morning routines take a lot longer, and our actual school work starts later than before, around 10 am. Once we get going though, it is a smooth day. While Karl-Abraham is asleep, we sit around the table and I help the boys with their work as usual. Whenever Karl-Abraham wakes up, we interrupt our work and move over to the couches for reading so that I can nurse him. Either I read aloud, or the boys do their daily reading. The boys love reading to Karl-Abraham, and August declared a few days ago that Karl-Abraham’s favorite book is Green Eggs and Ham. Needless to say, since then, I’ve heard that story read out loud probably over 100 times. The other morning I overheard August explaining to a, in my eyes, completely oblivious Karl-Abraham “Just a minute [carefully marking the exact spot], I’ll be right back to finish the story; I just have to go pee!”
