August was born on this day: Happy birthday!

Seven years ago, on my OBGYN’s 15th wedding anniversary and one month after 9/11, August was, after 36 hours of full labor and despite complete dilation, born by c-section on a Friday night at a hospital in Belgium.

I don’t remember any pain (courtesy of my friend Ann who was there for me then whole time -- and perhaps also courtesy of those wonderful happy hormones); I remember being scared on the operating table, and the anesthesiologist whispering comforting words in a Belgian dialect I’ve never fully come to master, while wiping my tears. I was totally exhausted and completely out of it after days of physical and mental labor (and probably because of the drugs as well), but then suddenly, there he was; big, cone-headed and healthy. After only a few minutes, he was put in Courtney’s waiting arms, and it was all done – what a beautiful sight it was!

We didn’t actually know that it was going to be a boy, but I had bought one single outfit – a baby blue one, and we had only one name picked out: August. He was our first baby, and today he is turning seven years old. Happy birthday, baby!

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
