This blog post is based on an article I read in the Swedish paper Aftonbladet about the recent terrible discoveries in Austria, where a woman was held prisoner, raped and abused by her father in their basement for 24 years without anyone around them ever noticing, not even his wife - her mother. The article is written by Karin Ahlborg who always brings out the sober and human angle in stories like this one. For 24 years, Rosemarie Fritzl didn’t notice anything.
Seven children were born in her basement. Rooms were rebuilt, things were carried back and forth, lives were lived literally in front of her feet, and she didn’t notice anything.
I see a woman who chose not to see the truth.
I’ve been through childbirth in a hospital surrounded by doctors, nurses, my husband and family.
Elisabeth Fritzl gave birth to her first child 19 years ago, and I wonder if she was surrounded by anyone, or if she was submitted to her own pain and fear without reassuring words, ice chips or security? Probably.
How could her children’s father - her father - comfort, calm or reassure her after having conceived children through rape in a prison cell? But he had to have been there somewhere. Child birth entails a lot of blood and even feces.
It is terribly impossible to imagine that this man went down to the basement, picked up the excreted placenta, wiped up blood and feces, perhaps even washed off the baby or at least left some rags to wipe her with. But he had to have done just that.
What is even more impossible to imagine is that not once for 24 years, did his wife, Elisabeth’s mother, wonder what actually went on down there in the basement.
How many times can someone go down to the basement without a specific purpose; how much can someone bring up from the basement in plastic bags or garbage bags without giving the spouse a look of wonder?
It is possible, of course, to close your eyes to thing that happen around you. Nobody around the children in Columbine was able to predict their terrible destiny, and nobody around Marc Detroux knew what he actually was capable of.
But here we’re talking about 24 years, and a person who walked on the floors that were her child's and her grandchildren’s ceiling for 8 766 days; 210 384 hours without any clue of what insanities went on under her own feet.
We’re talking about a person who never saw construction material being brought into the house, garbage taken out of the house, or food that disappeared down into a strange hole in the basement; a person that must have closed her eyes very hard when bloody rags, discharged placentas and dirty diapers were brought up from the basement.
The newspaper headlines tell us that ”Josef Fritzl fooled everyone” and I understand that neighbors and Bierstube friends let themselves be fooled, because who walks around suspecting that someone is completely insane if he’s not even wearing shoes that don’t match, speak to himself of wave off imaginary flies?
But how Rosemarie could have been so small and so stupid for so long is almost as big of a mystery as the wonder of what actually goes on in Josef Fritzl’s disgusting, messed up head.

These are exactly my thoughts. How can someone be so foolish just to think that her husband loved to be in the garden! I love to be in the garden, but my wife would immediately notice if I moved one tiny plant to some other place. So my thought is that she clearly knew or suspected what was going on, but did not want to go to jail for covering her husband's crimes.
Not only those 24 years and six birth, but 7 years before that... Elisabeth was abused since she was 11 yrs old. What kind of mother and wife would not notice that? In front of her eyes, with little girl of 11? One of the things I can not understand is caring for anything, or anyone, more than for your child.
I've read some of the other articles but I don't know if you could accuse Rosemarie of not poking around in the cellar.
For starters it was a two-story home where they let out the ground floor--so the demented man and his family lived on the top floor and some various tenants on the ground floor so she would have no reason to go to the cellar.
Austrian homes are designed differently from American homes--for example it is very common to have the equivalent of multiple apartments in one 'house' but what is in effect an apartment building. This is done as Grandparents and Parents can live under the same roof but have very separate quarters.
Austrians also have a strong composting/recycling mentality--if anything the wife would probably put all the compost away in the garden and the recycling would be put out on the ground floor, not in the basement.
However Rosemarie should have realized SOMETHING was wrong and even if she was abused herself she should have protected her daughter from day one.
During WWII, Amstetten had a horrific female concentration camp nearby. Unimaginable torture and depravity was inflicted on the female prisoners by the guards. Many of the Amstetten locals worked as guards. Fritzl was 10 years old when it was still running. Of course, the locals said nothing. No one stood up and said this is wrong. Many of the children of the camp guards still live in the town, but it is taboo to mention it. The entire Amstetten society psychology was forever wrecked by its complicity in the running of a German concentration camp. It’s easy to see how a young Fritzl monster was formed.
Women and children in Mauthausen-Gusen
Although the Mauthausen-Gusen camp complex was mostly a labour camp for men, a women's camp was opened in Mauthausen, in September of 1944, with the first transport of female prisoners from Auschwitz. Eventually, more women and children came to Mauthausen from Ravensbruck, Bergen Belsen, Gross Rosen, and Buchenwald. With them came some female guards. Twenty are known to have served in the Mauthausen camp, and sixty in the whole camp complex. Female guards also staffed the Mauthausen sub-camps at Hirtenberg, Lenzing (the main women's sub-camp in Austria), and St. Lambrecht. The Chief Overseers at Mauthausen were firstly Margarete Freinberger, and then Jane Bernigau. Of all the female Overseers who served in Mauthausen, almost all of them were recruited between September 1944, and November 1944, from Austrian cities and towns. In early April of 1945, at least 2,500 more female prisoners came from the female sub-camps at Amstetten, St. Lambrecht, Hirtenberg, and the Flossenbürg sub-camp at Freiberg. It is rumoured that Hildegard Lächert also served at Mauthausen.[32]
Common methods of extermination of prisoners, who were either sick, unfit for further labour or as a means of collective responsibility or after escape attempts included:
* Being beaten to death (by the SS and Kapos)
* Icy showers - some 3,000 inmates died of hypothermia - after having being forced to take an icy cold shower - and who were then left outside in cold weather.[43]
* Mass-shootings
* Medical experiments
o Aribert Heim, dubbed Doctor Death by the inmates, was there for seven weeks, which was enough to carry out his experiments[44]
o Another of the Nazi scientists to perform experiments on the inmates was Karl Gross, who purposely infected hundreds of prisoners with cholera and typhus in order to test his experimental vaccines on them. Between February 5, 1942, and mid-April of 1944, more than 1,500 prisoners were killed as a result of his experiments[45]
* Hanging
* Starvation
* Injections of phenol. (A group of 2,000 prisoners who applied to be transferred to the sanatorium were declared mentally sick and were killed by Dr. Ramsauer in the course of the H-13 action)[43]
* Drowning in large barrels of water (Gusen II)[46][47]
* Beating to death or starving to death in bunkers[48]
* Throwing the prisoners on the 380 volt electric barbed wire fence[48]
* Forcing prisoners outside the boundaries of the camp and then shooting them on the pretense (pretence) that they were attempting to escape[49]
Christ said that the poor would always be with us. I guess the same can be said of the monsters. It's up to the rest of us to notice and say something, whether it's in our neighborhoods or our own homes. Monsters can't live in the light.
This entire case stinks to high heaven! This is what is allowed to continue to happen, when a society/culture is "too polite" and minds their own business far too much!
And if the whole thing isn't sad, horrible, bad and shady enough - there's this completely idiotic statement made by the Head Criminal Investigator:
"It defies logical thinking that a woman who has had seven children with her husband would make it possible for him to have another relationship with his daughter and have another seven children," Franz Pölzer, the head of the criminal investigations unit in the province of Lower Austria, said.
IT DEFIES LOGICAL THINKING THAT A MAN COULD EVEN DO THIS, BUT HE DID YOU FOOL, SO OPEN YOUR EYES...because apparently anything is possible!!!

I totally agree - Rosemarie Fritzl's (possible) participation in this horrific exchange that has been going on for more than 2 decades should be scrutinized further by investigators. A BBC report stated that if convicted, (yes, IF, I mean SERIOUSLY?) Josef Fritzl will serve up to 15 years in prison. I think that's pathetic - I mean, he's 73 at the moment. I firmly believe the man should just be either, a) shot dead, or b) hanged. This is a man who destroyed his own child. Even an animal protects his offspring to the best of its abilities. The long-term damage he has caused is despicable.
It's in the news, DNA proved Josef Fritzl fathered his daughter's children, all seven of them with one dead. Papers tell daughter kept in cellar as sex slave. We're curious, was her DNA analyzed if she's really a biological daughter of Josef? The relevance of our question is that even if she's a biological daughter and her father could have done this to her, moreso he can do this to her sisters. What makes us sicker is the possibility of Kerstin and the other daughters of Elisabeth being molested and abused as well by this man. Hope investigators will look at all these angle of possibilities. One more thing, there is Rosemarie, Elisabeth's mother and her six other siblings. Something is goin' on under their nose and not one in the family ever noticed something peculiar? Not one among them ever wondered something's bizaare with their Dad?
Rosemaries part in this crime should be immediately cleared up by intensive investigations. She should be heard by the police day and night - instead, she is comforted by friendly doctors and psychologists. What a bizarre mistake. I am convinced she knew all about it, during the seven years of sexual abuse "in freedom", she must have noticed that her husband had massive interest in her daughter. Mother or not - perhaps she began to hate her, in the role of his "girl friend", his sex mate, the natural enemy of all spouses. Can it be, that Rosemarie started to hate her daughter, so much younger and beautiful, and sexually immensely attractive to Josef? Perhaps Rosemarie even demanded: "Get her out of my house! Not in front of my eyes!", and maybe she found that living in the cellar was the right punishment for Elisabeth, having taken away her husband. The right treatment for her "wicked, wicked" daughter ... Maybe father and mother, Rosemarie and Josef, were not so far from each other, as Franz Polzer and some other people seem to believe.
Rosemarie Fritzl was probably terrified of her husband. But that does not excuse her of letting these monstrous things happen under her roof. I am sure she knew about what was going on and chose to remain silent. Another curious thing is, how could Josepf Fritzl be gone for 4 to 6 weeks vacation periods without his hidden "family" starving to death? Police says there is no way to stack food for more than 2 weeks in the dungeon. So, to me, Rosemarie Fritzl is the accomplice averybody suspects exists. There is absolutely no way that four people can be imprisoned, fed, their garbage being disposed of, etc... without ANYBODY noticing ANYTHING for 24 years. Josef Fritzl is sick. An so is his wife.
What a terrible, terrible harm they have inflicted upon so many innocents.
Isn't it obvious to everyone that Rosemarie IS the accomplice? The informant was given total anonymity, duh. But clearly the police/prosecutors in this case are knowledgeable enough to also recognize that she is a victim, in this case his first victim, and that Fritzl's crimes didn't start with raping Elisabeth.
My second rant has to do with the reponses to the horrific story in Austria. Horrific, indeed. Hell on earth, literally. It is a story that has haunted me since I first heard of it. I find myself thinking about it a lot. I find it to be confirmation that true evil in an individual does really exist. There seems to be no other way to explain such a situation. However, I have to say that I was rather surprised and somewhat saddened by the many angry responses that want to make Elisabeth as monstrous as her husband. I was surprised because I found the responses to be so very different from my first response. When I first heard of the details of the story, my first feeling towards Elisabeth was that she, too, was a victim. First, she lost her young daughter believing that she was abducted. This, alone, would probably be enough to make me lose my mind. Second, one can only imagine the abuse she has suffered at the hands of this man from the first day he entered her life, let alone after the imprisonment of her daughter. What lengths can we imagine he went to in order to carry out his crimes? Certainly, continued abuse of Elisabeth would have cost him no extra energy in comparison. I have not read any further details of what police have uncovered in terms of her exact role over the years. But, I would be very surprised if she were found to be complicit - and by this I mean that she, of her own will, took part in the imprisonment and abuse of her daughter and the children. Did she notice things? Did she have any knowledge that something was going on? It is possible that she didn't - if she was seriously abused over the years, the damage she suffered both physically and emotionally could run too deep to allow her to notice anything. It is also possible that she did know/notice, but still couldn't do anything because he prevented her from acting. My feeling is that she was also very much a prisoner in that house.
I find it troublesome that many people are quick to call Elisabeth "foolish", "stupid", "uncaring of her children." One respondent said that "even if she was abused herself, she should have protected her children." This seems to me a clear misunderstanding of what it means to be an abused woman. This gets to the heart of what violence against women fosters and why it is so heinous and destructive. This is exactly the reason laws against violence against women need to be taken so seriously. A woman, a person, a child abused so radically cannot make such rational choices, they cannot 'see' clearly. We do a further injustice to these women by blaming them for their own abuse; we victimize them even more by calling them foolish.
If Elisabeth willingly and rationally took part in Fritzl's crimes, then yes, she is complicit and is as much of a monster as he is and deserves the same punishment. The liklihood, however, that she suffered ongoing abuse at his hands is far greater. As a woman, my first impulse is to give her the benefit of the doubt as well as my compassion. My guess is that he, alone, perpetrated the evils that went on in that household. For him, Fortuna's Wheel will spin.

Fritzl was convicted and served time in prison for rape after he and Rosemarie married and after they'd had children (including Elisabeth).
Rosemarie had a year and a half to vanish and cover her tracks before he got out of prison. Instead she waited for him in what one of her relatives have called "a desperate attempt to keep her family together."
She's guilty--at a minimum--of some pretty horrible parenting and decision-making. No other way to look at it.

to have finally left in order to join some sort of
“phantom” cult (a "cult" which, unlike every other
cult, just somehow, seemingly has no desire to try
to indoctrinate the youth from birth, but rather it
simply allows it's members to select a home --one
which in fact, is both not a part of the cult AND is
the very home from which the member ran in order
to join the cult ---to raise their babies and kids of

Yeah, I gotta agree that the old bitch Rosemarie knew what was going on. If she didn't, she is criminally stupid and should be in jail for that reason. Someone this stupid should just be ground up and used as fertilizer, not have tax dollars spent on her "therapy." She is a waste of air.
Remember the BTK killer in Wichita, Kansas? He kept evidence of his crimes in a box in his closet, and told his wife to stay away from it. She did. Obviously, BTK, Josef Fritzl, and others know how to pick the perfect spouses (accomplices?).

I have been so sad about this since notice first appeared in the news. It is beyond all comprehension that this could have happened. I feel so sad for poor Elisabeth and for her sweet children -- especially those who were forced to live downstairs. No, for all of them equally. What a horrible legacy that man has left them with, and yet they will now (those who survive) have the freedom to create their own legacy.
My eyes have been opened about a lot of things: concentration camps, Hitler's society, feminist issues in the global arena, legal systems in other countries, and (I'm sorry) human stupidity.
I don't understand how, given the whole situation, the family could have been so quickly united. That mother just has to have known on some level. By uniting them like this, they are forcing Elisabeth to maintain the cycle of denial. "How could she have known? We are so happy to see each other."
Personally, I can't understand how this has effected me so, but I just want to surround her with warm thoughts and fresh air, sunshine and peace.
God be with you Elisabeth, and with you sweet children, also. As much as I want to know that you are well, I want you to have a life of your own that is private and free from all of us curious well-wishers.
· There is no way the wife of Fritzl did not know about this. He went down to the basement every 2-3 days, taking barrels of food down, removing garbage from there on a regular basis, taking clothes, having dinner there and staying all night on occasion. Noise coming from the basement, not letting anyone else go down there, evicting a tenant who had a dog that sensed something. A missing daughter, huge electric and water bills. You would have to be the biggest moron on the face of the earth to not know something was going on in your own basement FOR 24 YEARS! Mrs. Fritzl is as guilty as he is, for not investigating and reporting this. Timidity and head-in-the-sand mentality are no excuse.
Absolutely - Mrs. Fritzl is just as responsible for this heinous crime as her husband. Sins of omission are, in fact, worse than sins of commission. At least the doer knows that he does wrong; this Mrs "I didn't know" idiot needs to have her wrong doings called to mind.
There is no way this woman did not know anything, and as it goes, more truths will emerge.

This man lived in the house with the dungeon, knew about food being brought to the cellar, saw the wife helping and never said a word. HHHMMMM. So was he a victim of this man's mind control too?
Fritzl has finally confessed to his crimes! Now lets get HER in the dock, and find out just how much she knew, and punish her accordingly too.
