Visitors from Belgium came and went

Our house guests since one week left yesterday. It was very nice to have visitors, and they brought wonderful things from Belgium that we’ve missed (such as ham and box wine), however having someone stay with you for seven days does turn things upside down a bit; I haven’t gone jogging for a whole week, we’ve consumed a lot more alcohol and certainly spent a lot more money than normal and the boys’ schooling has been minimal. The beauty with home schooling though is that we can catch up at our own pace, and today we certainly made a lot of progress.

Apart from giving us a break from our everyday life and providing us with pork and alcohol, our house guests also forced us to brush up on our Dutch which for the past half year has been reduced to reading the few Belgian children’s books we have every other night. I also realized that I, after all, and I never thought I would be saying this, miss Belgium and the life we had there a bit. What suddenly and most effectively brought back memories was my first sip of Duivel on the night that Anne and Radka arrived. It’s amazing how taste and smell can produce a feeling as complete as an entire memory. It was all suddenly there; my work, friends, the language, food, the Friday market, Saturday afternoon in town, watching the sun set from our garden, shopping at GB, the Stadhuis, biking through town in the rain, church bells, De Lijn, Mevrouw Griet and mayonnaise. Dank U wel, Anne & Radka, voor jullie bezoek. We zien jullie graag terug!

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
