The end of Ramadan and Eid anno 2007 in Egypt

Today is the last day of Eid, the feast representing the end of Ramadan. Some things have already returned to normal; on Friday right at Iftar, Drinkies (our alcoholic beverages provider) opened up after an entire month of draught, and yesterday the grocery store didn’t close right before dinner time.

Our taxi driver and friend Emad told us that he, on the first day of Eid, is woken up by his children who expect to receive money – unmarked money, as in; they can spend it on whatever they want – and that all fathers give their children money on this day. “The streets will be full of kids partying” he said, and added that this usually goes on until 7 or 8 in the morning. Indeed we heard them, and today the streets seem particularly dirty.

Now that Ramadan and Eid are nearly over, maybe everything will go back to normal.

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
